Beyond Parody

I really hope that the outrageous protests cooked up by these special interest groups are carried out for the sole purpose of grabbing headlines and forcing people to notice them. Can they actually be serious?

PETA proposes robotic groundhog for Pa. festival

People for the Ethical Treatment of Animals says it’s unfair to keep the animal in captivity and subject him to the huge crowds and bright lights that accompany tens of thousands of revelers each Feb. 2 in Punxsutawney, a tiny borough about 65 miles northeast of Pittsburgh. PETA is suggesting the use of an animatronic model.
But William Deeley, president of the Inner Circle of the Punxsutawney Groundhog Club, says the animal is “being treated better than the average child in Pennsylvania.” The groundhog is kept in a climate-controlled environment and is inspected annually by the state Department of Agriculture.

  1. “Mother Teresa is principally known as a religious figure who ran a religious institution. You can’t really separate her being a nun and being a Roman Catholic from everything she did,” Gaylor told
Yet if we were to say that taking care of the poor, etc were Christian traits would Gaylor argue against that.. you can’t have it both ways.

  2. I couldn’t help but think of the robotic gopher in Caddyshack when reading this. Doug Wilson at Blog and Mablog makes a pretty good point that because man is in the image of God, he has an innate desire for righteousness, and that when he is disobedient to God’s commands about sex, for instance, he must displace that desire for righteousness with new man made systems of righteousness such as healthy food righteousness. Peta is another great example of man made righteousness.
